Her parents are Dennis Alan Taylor, a former banking executive and Jennifer Marina Joy, a psychologist, she is about half English and half Spanish. Her father is Argentine and Scottish English descent. Her mother has Spanish and English roots. The four siblings of Taylor-Joy are from her father's previous marriage. They lived at Buenos Aires until she was six, after which they moved to the Victoria part in London. Taylor Joy stated that moving from Buenos Aires, to Victoria was tough and she didn't take the time to learn English in hopes of going home to Argentina. Hill House was the new school she needed to go to after she left Northlands. In the following year, she joined Queen's Gate School to study ballet and act in the school's productions. She dropped out of the high school aged 16 in order to concentrate on her acting career. Taylor-Joy always knew that she wanted to become an actor. This was achieved when Sarah Doukas founder of Storm Management gave Taylor-Joy an opportunity to model.
