O'Neil entered O'Neil took part in the Canadian Idol third season auditions in the spring of 2005, when the singer was still in high school. She made it to the top 100 round because the judges were thrilled at her singing performance. O'Neil's performance was highly praised by jury. However, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in her Top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for bottom 3, and the bottom 2. Judges were amazed by her performance, and suggested viewers choose singers who were well-known like Melissa. O'Neil's performances were so good that she never placed in the third place in the future. O'Neil's two further performances of September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced to the final two in the competition's contest, Werner reportedly forecast that morning the newspapers would be reporting O'Neil's triumph over Rex Goudie as she became the 3rd Canadian Idol and first female champion. O'Neil was contacted right away from Canadian Premier Paul Martin, congratulating on her win of Canadian Idol.
