O'Grady is a native of Detroit, Michigan, the daughter of Jan and Jim O'Grady, a financial planner. The family was raised by her parents in Wheaton (Illinois) as well. She graduated in 1981 from North High School of Wheaton. She appeared as a model in commercials for some time prior to moving into Los Angeles. Her first job was an Montgomery Ward model, where she also appeared in a variety of commercials. She first appeared on the big screen in 1988, in the romantic comedy she's Having a Baby. She was later cast in the main character in ABC Drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Also, she guest starred in several series. She appeared in both the independent and TV-produced movies. Donna Abandando is her first part as a main role in ABC's NYPD Blue. O'Grady as the long-haired, secretariat character between 1993 and 1996, was awarded Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting actor. In addition to the actors, she received the Screen Actors Guild Award for Best Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series in 1995.
